Marilyn and Me - Ji Min Lee
I am part of a few different book groups on facebook, one of them is for the subscription box of 'a box of stories' where you get a box of whatever genre you wish each month, four books are included in each box. My first box came with Marilyn and Me, a book I was hoping I'd receive due to how many times I'd seen it in the group, knowing I love any international fiction, this one was right up my street.
It's a quiet easy read about a women in Korea after the Korean war who's working as an English, Japanese and Korean interpreter for the army. Word is out that Marilyn Monroe is coming to Korea and Alice (our main protagonist) is hired to look after Marilyn and interpret for her. However, since the war and before the war Alice hasn't had the easiest life being labelled as crazy and lost so as we travel between past and present learning about Alice, we see an unlucky friendship form between Marilyn and Alice.
I gave it a 3 out 5 stars, I knew it wasn't going to be my favourite but I'm extremely glad I read it. I myself would put this under more of a category of 'historical fiction' which I don't read a lot of but happy to pick up every now and again.
I full review of the 'A Box of Stories' box will go up once I've read all the other three books from the box. I may even go for another genre next time just to see the variety in the boxes.
Thankyou
