Out - Natsuo Kirino
Over the years I've found some true love for Japanese fiction and horror, and this - was no exception. It's a fairly lengthy thriller/crime novel - Kirino is a true genius at setting up the scene and making it eerie. I am excited to delve into more of their work. And, Christ.. look at that cover.
Masako is our main character, working the graveyard shift at a bento factory with three other women, Yoshie, Kumiko and Yayoi. All four have extremely complicated lives but have become friends over the years working for a factory. One night Yayoi requires the help of the leader of the group, Masako but equally all four women are dragged into the problem one by one, sometimes just by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Some have accepted their fate, others have not, however as their problem develops and becomes much bigger - due to Kuniko's selfishness and laziness, more people become involved; dangerous people and the secrets each of the women have been keeping are slowly unravelling.
Kirino really highlights these women with such grace even though, they aren't doing very feminine things in the novel. She shows that they are strong, willing and don't need anyone to help fix their problems - maybe just each other.
4 out of 5 stars for me. Can't wait to read more.
Thankyou
