Girl, Interrupted - Susanna Kaysen
Girl, Interrupted - Susanna Kaysen
This is a beautiful memoir, I watched the
film many many years ago when it first came out, and knew that one day I'd get
my hands on the book. It took a while and some hard searching and finally got it
for a reasonable price, second hand from worldofbooks.com I read it in a few
hours, although it is short - it has an impact.
Without any major spoilers, it's
about this woman's time during her stay at a hospital for a personality
disorder, its about the friendships and relationships she forms while she's in
the unit, the care from the nurses and doctors and it also highlights several
stories for how some of the girls lives turned out. The book itself even has
parts of her hospital notes and documents from the time she was admitted to her
time leaving the institute. To be honest, when I first brought the book I had no
idea it was a memoir, it just looked like a story I was interested in
completely. Truly though I'm not sure it was intentional but Kaysen it
genuinely funny and light hearted even without trying to be. She's taking
something that was probably quite traumatic in her life and made it positive, it
seems like in a strange way - she actually enjoyed her time there and made some
lifelong friends, even if possibly she never saw them again once she left.
Although, I think we all have friends who you don't spend time with and once you
see them again, boom it's like you never spent time apart.
All in all, I gave
this 5/5 stars on my goodreads because I genuinely loved it and would happily
read it again. If you're looking for something, quick, real and raw then try
this. It does not disappoint. Thank you
